Big names return to Aussie squad for Windies T20Is

Australia welcome back a quartet of star players for their upcoming two-match Dettol T20 Series against West Indies in Brisbane and Gold Coast as they scale up preparations for defence of the T20 World Cup later this year.

Opener David Warner, allrounders Mitchell Marsh and Marcus Stoinis, and pace spearhead Mitchell Starc all return to the 16-man squad having missed the recent three-match Qantas T20 series in India.

Australia T20 squad: Aaron Finch (c), Sean Abbott, Pat Cummins, Tim David, Cameron Green, Josh Hazlewood, Josh Inglis, Mitchell Marsh, Glenn Maxwell, Daniel Sams, Steve Smith, Mitchell Starc, Marcus Stoinis, Matthew Wade, David Warner, Adam Zampa

Warner was rested from that campaign to manage his preparation for the World Cup in Australia starting next month, while Marsh (ankle), Stoinis (side strain) and Starc (knee) have overcome injury.

Allrounder Cameron Green, who flourished as skipper Aaron Finch’s opening partner in India, has been retained in the squad despite not being included in Australia’s line-up for the World Cup.

Pace bowler Kane Richardson and spin-bowling all-rounder Ashton Agar won’t take part in the West Indies series at Metricon Stadium (Gold Coast) and the Gabba (Brisbane) to ensure they in peak shape for the World Cup defence that begins when Australia take on New Zealand at the SCG on October 22.

“We have and are taking a cautious approach with the World Cup on the near horizon,” National Selection Panel chair George Bailey said today.

“To have four key players return gives us the ability to take a conservative path with any minor issues and resolve those well in time for the World Cup.

“As such we anticipate Kane and Ashton will return for the following series against England (from October 9-14.”

The three-match Dettol T20 series against England will be staged in Perth and Canberra, with Australia also scheduled to play a World Cup warm-up game against India at the Gabba on October 17.
